From Classroom to National Leadership: PANDEF Celebrates Fasoranti’s Century of Service Like That of Late Edwin Clark

YENAGOA — From decades in the classroom to the commanding heights of progressive politics, the late Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti dedicated his life to education, principled leadership and the pursuit of a more equitable Nigeria, the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has said.

Fasoranti, former National Leader of Afenifere, died on October 20, 2026, at the age of 100, leaving behind a legacy that PANDEF described as one of integrity, quiet consistency and selfless service to humanity.

In a condolence statement issued on October 22, PANDEF National Chairman, Ambassador Godknows Boladei Igali, PhD, OON, said the late elder statesman's contributions to education, progressive politics and national development had earned him a lasting place in Nigeria's history.

The forum described Fasoranti as an educationist of the highest standing who taught for decades and served as an accomplished school principal before emerging as one of the prominent voices in Nigeria's progressive political movement.

According to PANDEF, his transition from the classroom to national political leadership reflected a lifelong commitment to human development, democratic accountability and the advancement of a society founded on justice, equity and responsible governance.

His commitment to public service, the organisation noted, was reinforced by his admiration for the political philosophy of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, whose progressive ideals shaped his political outlook and strengthened his belief in accountable leadership and social justice.

As National Leader of Afenifere, Fasoranti remained a strong advocate for restructuring, true federalism and the devolution of power, positions that placed him among the influential voices in Nigeria's national political discourse.

PANDEF observed that his advocacy was driven by the conviction that a fairer constitutional arrangement would enable Nigeria's diverse ethnic nationalities to coexist peacefully while promoting balanced development and effective governance.

The forum also commended his role in fostering inter-regional cooperation through the South and Middle Belt Leaders Forum, which brought together leading socio-political organisations from the South-South, South-West, South-East and Middle Belt.

The organisation recalled his close relationship with the late Pa Ayo Adebanjo and his mutual respect for the late Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, noting that these relationships reflected his belief in collaboration across ethnic and regional boundaries.

PANDEF said the similarities between Fasoranti and Clark extended beyond their status as elder statesmen to their longstanding engagement with issues of federalism, restructuring, national unity and the protection of the interests of their respective regions.

While Fasoranti emerged as a prominent voice in the Yoruba progressive movement, Clark became a leading advocate for the Niger Delta, consistently drawing national attention to the region's developmental challenges, resource control and demands for greater equity within the federation.

The forum noted that the contributions of such elder statesmen underscored the importance of dialogue, mutual respect and cooperation in addressing Nigeria's longstanding political and constitutional challenges.

According to PANDEF, Fasoranti's life demonstrated that meaningful nation-building requires integrity, consistency, respect for democratic principles and a willingness to work with others for the common good.

The organisation said his death marked a significant moment in Nigeria's progressive political history, particularly at a time when the country continued to grapple with questions of national cohesion, constitutional reform, economic justice and inclusive governance.

It expressed the hope that his legacy would continue to inspire younger generations of political leaders, educators and civic advocates committed to national peace, justice, equity and the rule of law.

PANDEF extended its condolences to the Fasoranti family, Afenifere, the Akure Kingdom, Ondo State and the entire Yoruba nation, expressing solidarity with all those mourning the departure of the centenarian statesman.

Quoting Revelation 14:13, the organisation encouraged the bereaved family and the Yoruba nation to find comfort in the biblical assurance that those who die in the Lord will rest from their labours and their works will follow them.

The forum prayed that God would grant the departed elder statesman eternal rest, adding that his century of service to education, progressive politics and national development would remain an enduring part of Nigeria's political heritage.
