The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has expressed deep grief over the Nigerian Air Force aircraft crash near Igbokoda in Ondo State, calling for a comprehensive investigation into the tragedy and urgent measures to strengthen the operational capacity and safety of the nation’s armed forces.

PANDEF, in a statement signed by its National Chairman, Dr. Godknows Boladei Igali, said the tragedy had plunged the country into mourning, particularly the South-South geopolitical zone, following reports that several of its sons were among those who lost their lives in the incident.

The forum said the crash, which occurred on Monday, October 5, 2026, was a painful reminder of the enormous risks undertaken by Nigerian military personnel in the defence of the nation.

According to PANDEF, the aircraft reportedly went down in deep waters around the sandy terrain near Igbokoda, with 27 crew members and passengers reportedly lost in the tragic incident.

The forum condoled with the families of the deceased, the Nigerian Air Force, the Federal Government and Nigerians across the country, describing the victims as patriots who paid the supreme price in the service of their fatherland.

PANDEF said the loss was particularly painful because many of those who perished were young Nigerians who were serving the country while carrying out sensitive operational duties.

It urged Nigerians to observe the period of mourning with prayers for the bereaved families and for the protection of military personnel currently serving in various theatres of operation across the country.

The South-South socio-cultural and political organisation also called on the Federal Government to intensify investment in the welfare, training, equipment and operational readiness of the nation's armed forces.

It stressed that military personnel deployed on hazardous national assignments deserved modern and properly maintained equipment, adequate logistical support and an enabling environment to discharge their responsibilities effectively.

PANDEF further demanded a thorough, transparent and comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The forum said the investigation should establish the immediate and remote causes of the incident and identify any factors that may have contributed to the tragedy, with a view to preventing a recurrence.

It said lessons arising from the investigation should be translated into concrete reforms in aircraft maintenance, military aviation safety, operational planning and equipment management.

Beyond the immediate tragedy, PANDEF appealed to Nigerians to close ranks and strengthen national solidarity at a time the country was confronted by diverse security challenges.

The forum noted that the prevailing security situation required collective responsibility, patriotism and a renewed commitment to peace and national unity.

It therefore urged citizens, political leaders and other stakeholders to rise above ethnic, political and other differences and support genuine efforts aimed at securing the country and protecting the lives of Nigerians.

PANDEF said the fallen military personnel should not be remembered merely as victims of an unfortunate accident, but as patriots who sacrificed their lives in the service of Nigeria.

The forum prayed for the repose of the souls of the departed and for divine comfort and strength for their families, colleagues and loved ones.

This version gives the story a stronger front-page news angle, with the investigation, military equipment and national security demands brought forward.
