Tributes Pour In for Prof. Turner Isoun: PANDEF Celebrates Life of Visionary Scholar, Statesman and Nation Builder By Wilson Macaulay
Tributes have continued to pour in from across Nigeria and beyond following the passing of renowned scientist, distinguished academic, former Minister of Science and Technology, and founding Board of Trustees member of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Professor Turner T. Isoun, whose death has been described as a monumental loss to the nation and the Niger Delta region.
Professor Isoun died in Abuja on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at the age of 87, bringing to a close a remarkable lifetime dedicated to scientific excellence, educational advancement, technological innovation, and national service.
In a statement signed by its National Chairman, Ambassador Dr. Godknows Boladei, OON, PANDEF expressed profound grief over the passing of one of its most respected founding fathers, describing him as an intellectual giant whose wisdom, patriotism, and unwavering commitment greatly shaped both the organization and Nigeria's scientific landscape.
According to PANDEF, Professor Isoun's distinguished career spanned decades of outstanding scholarship, research, public administration, and institution-building. He served as Special Adviser on Science and Technology to the Rivers State Government before becoming the pioneer Vice Chancellor of the then Rivers State University of Science and Technology, now Rivers State University, Port Harcourt.
The forum noted that his greatest national impact came during his tenure as Minister of Science and Technology under the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, when he spearheaded landmark reforms that transformed Nigeria's science and technology sector.
PANDEF recalled that Professor Isoun was instrumental in the establishment and strengthening of strategic institutions that continue to drive innovation and technological development across the country. These include the Nigeria Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Nigeria Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT), National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), the Nigerian Institute of Biotechnology, and the Galaxy Backbone Technology Hub.
Beyond government service, Professor Isoun earned global recognition as a Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Science and the African Academy of Sciences. He also founded the Wetland Centre in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, a research institution dedicated to environmental studies and sustainable development, while serving as pioneer Chairman of the Bayelsa Education Trust Fund and founding leader of the Rivers Study Group.
His exceptional contributions to national development were recognized with the prestigious national honour of Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR).
Within PANDEF, Professor Isoun was celebrated not only as a founding trustee but also as one of the principal architects of the forum's policy framework. The organization noted that he played a central role in drafting the historic 16-Point Agenda for the sustainable development of the Niger Delta, which PANDEF presented to former President Muhammadu Buhari on November 1, 2016.
The forum further disclosed that, in a demonstration of his unwavering commitment to the Niger Delta cause, Professor Isoun generously donated his Wetland Centre in Yenagoa to serve as PANDEF's temporary National Secretariat—a facility that remains the organization's operational headquarters.
Describing him as a visionary scholar, nation builder, mentor, and bridge-builder, PANDEF said his life exemplified integrity, intellectual brilliance, humility, and selfless service to humanity.
"Professor Turner T. Isoun was one of the finest minds our nation has produced. His contributions to science, education, public policy, and the development of the Niger Delta will remain a lasting reference point for generations to come. His legacy will continue to inspire scholars, policymakers, and young Nigerians who aspire to use knowledge in the service of humanity," the statement noted.
The organization extended its heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Bayelsa State, his hometown of Odi, his wife of sixty years, Mrs. Miriam Isoun, his children, and the entire Isoun family.
As a mark of honour for the departed elder statesman, PANDEF directed all its branches across Nigeria and in the diaspora to observe a three-day mourning period beginning Tuesday, July 21, 2026, while funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in due course.
The passing of Professor Turner T. Isoun marks the end of an extraordinary chapter in Nigeria's scientific and public service history. Yet, his enduring legacy—reflected in the institutions he built, the policies he championed, the scholars he mentored, and the developmental vision he advanced for the Niger Delta—will continue to illuminate the path of national progress.
For many Nigerians, especially within the Niger Delta, Professor Turner T. Isoun will be remembered not merely as an accomplished scientist or former minister, but as a visionary whose ideas transformed institutions, whose leadership inspired generations, and whose lifelong commitment to knowledge and nation-building has secured him a place among Nigeria's most distinguished patriots. May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace.
