Foremost Niger Delta philanthropist and Chairman of the Delta State Mini Football Association, Dr. Mulade Sheriff, alongside the President of the Nigeria Mini Football Association, Alhaji Datti Umar Yusuf, has arrived in Portugal to observe and participate in one of the world’s largest grassroots football tournaments.

The duo is attending the globally renowned IberCup 2026, a prestigious competition featuring over 400 teams drawn from more than 30 countries, with participants ranging between the ages of 10 and 18.

Speaking during the event, Ambassador Mulade, who also serves as Vice President of the Nigeria Mini Football Association, emphasized the importance of the trip in advancing youth football development initiatives in Nigeria, particularly through his Africa 4 Peace Sports Academy.

He described the tournament as both inspiring and impactful, noting that it provides a rare platform for young talents to showcase their skills in a conducive and competitive environment where international scouts are actively present.

“It is truly impressive to witness young players from diverse backgrounds display their talents in such an organized setting,” Mulade said. “This kind of exposure creates real opportunities for discovery and development.”

He further commended the performance of Nigerian teams at the tournament, revealing that four teams from the country—predominantly from the northern region—are participating and performing commendably. According to him, their exposure to international competitions gives them a competitive edge.

Mulade used the opportunity to call on stakeholders in the Niger Delta, including political office holders and private investors, to prioritize grassroots sports development. He stressed that strategic investment in youth sports could significantly reduce unemployment, foster talent development, and boost tourism potential within the region.

The 2026 edition of the IberCup is being hosted in Portugal, bringing together young football talents from across the globe in a celebration of sportsmanship, diversity, and future football excellence
