PTI, OGTAN Launch Strategic Drive to Build Globally Competitive Energy Workforce

The Petroleum Training Institute (PTI), Effurun, and the Oil and Gas Trainers Association of Nigeria (OGTAN) have launched a strategic initiative aimed at building a globally competitive workforce for Nigeria's oil, gas, and emerging energy sectors through an expanded partnership focused on human capital development, professional certification, and industry capacity building.

The renewed collaboration came to the fore during a high-level engagement between the management of PTI and executives of OGTAN at the institute's headquarters in Effurun, Delta State, where both organizations reaffirmed their commitment to developing a highly skilled workforce capable of meeting the demands of the evolving global energy landscape.

Speaking during the visit, the President of OGTAN, Mr. Chris Osarumwense, expressed delight at the opportunity to deepen the long-standing relationship between the association and PTI. He noted that the partnership has the potential to significantly transform workforce development and training standards within Nigeria's energy industry.

Osarumwense stated that OGTAN enjoys the strong support of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) and remains committed to promoting excellence in training delivery, quality assurance, accreditation, and the establishment of globally recognized professional standards. He lamented the enormous resources spent annually by Nigerians on foreign certifications and emphasized the need to strengthen local certification frameworks while maintaining international best practices.

According to him, Nigerian training institutions possess the technical competence, expertise, and infrastructure required to deliver world-class certification programmes that can compete favorably with international standards. He disclosed that plans are already underway for a major Human Capital Development Conference and Exhibition scheduled to hold at PTI, Effurun, from August 25 to 27, 2026.

The conference, expected to attract between 350 and 500 delegates from across the oil and gas value chain, will focus on workforce development, capacity building, innovation, and industry performance. Osarumwense also proposed the review and enhancement of the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between PTI and OGTAN and called for the establishment of a Joint Committee to identify areas of mutual benefit and implement strategic initiatives.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Principal and Chief Executive Officer of PTI, Engr. Dr. Samuel Onoji, underscored the importance of collaboration in addressing the manpower needs of Nigeria's rapidly changing energy sector. He described PTI as a premier institution with extensive training facilities, research capabilities, and technical expertise capable of supporting industry-wide human capital development programmes.

A concept note presented during the meeting outlined several areas of collaboration, including joint professional certification programmes, technical and vocational skills development, digital transformation initiatives, energy transition training, research and development projects, and the establishment of an OGTAN–PTI Centre of Excellence for Human Capital Development.

The proposed partnership is also expected to enhance graduate employability through internship opportunities, mentorship programmes, stakeholder engagement platforms, and internationally accredited training schemes. Stakeholders at the meeting noted that these initiatives would not only strengthen local content development but also improve the competitiveness of Nigeria's workforce in the global energy market.

Further highlighting the significance of the forthcoming conference, OGTAN delegate Mr. Joe Oduah described it as Nigeria's foremost Human Capital Development platform for the oil and gas industry. He revealed that the event would feature ministerial keynote addresses, executive leadership sessions, exhibitions, networking opportunities, and strategic discussions designed to shape the future of workforce development in Nigeria's energy sector.

Industry stakeholders expressed optimism that the PTI-OGTAN alliance would provide a sustainable framework for training excellence, innovation, and capacity development, positioning Nigeria to produce a new generation of globally competitive professionals capable of driving growth and transformation across the energy industry.
