PTI, OGTAN Deepen Partnership to Drive Skills Revolution in Nigeria’s Energy Industry

The Petroleum Training Institute (PTI), Effurun, and the Oil and Gas Trainers Association of Nigeria (OGTAN) have taken significant steps toward deepening their strategic partnership as both institutions seek to drive a skills revolution capable of transforming Nigeria's oil, gas, and emerging energy sectors.

The renewed collaboration was the focus of a high-level meeting held at PTI, Effurun, where executives of OGTAN engaged with the management of the foremost petroleum training institution on ways to strengthen workforce development, improve professional certification standards, and enhance the global competitiveness of Nigeria's energy industry.

Speaking during the visit, the President of OGTAN, Mr. Chris Osarumwense, described the engagement as a crucial milestone in the association's efforts to deepen its long-standing relationship with PTI. He noted that both organizations share a common vision of building a highly skilled workforce that can meet the evolving demands of the global energy landscape.

Osarumwense emphasized that OGTAN remains committed to promoting excellence in training delivery, quality assurance, accreditation, and professional certification within the oil and gas industry. He disclosed that the association enjoys the support of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) and continues to champion initiatives aimed at strengthening local capacity development.

According to him, Nigeria loses substantial resources annually to foreign certification programmes, a trend he believes can be reversed through the development of internationally recognized local certification systems. He expressed confidence that Nigerian training providers possess the technical expertise, facilities, and manpower required to deliver world-class certification programmes that meet global standards.

As part of efforts to accelerate skills development across the sector, Osarumwense announced plans for a major Human Capital Development Conference and Exhibition scheduled to hold at PTI, Effurun, from August 25 to 27, 2026. The event is expected to attract between 350 and 500 delegates from across the energy value chain and will focus on workforce development, innovation, productivity enhancement, and industry performance.

He further advocated for the review and strengthening of the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between OGTAN and PTI. He also proposed the establishment of a Joint Committee tasked with identifying strategic areas of collaboration and developing practical initiatives capable of delivering measurable outcomes for the industry.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Principal and Chief Executive Officer of PTI, Engr. Dr. Samuel Onoji, highlighted the critical role of strategic partnerships in addressing the manpower challenges facing Nigeria's rapidly evolving energy sector. He noted that PTI's robust training infrastructure, technical expertise, and research capabilities position the institute as a valuable partner in driving industry-wide capacity development.

A concept note presented during the meeting outlined key areas of collaboration, including joint professional certification programmes, technical and vocational skills training, digital transformation initiatives, energy transition programmes, research and development projects, and the establishment of an OGTAN–PTI Centre of Excellence for Human Capital Development.

The proposed partnership framework also seeks to enhance graduate employability through internship placements, mentorship schemes, stakeholder engagement forums, and internationally accredited training programmes. Stakeholders believe these initiatives will strengthen local content development while creating a pipeline of highly skilled professionals capable of competing effectively in the global energy market.

Speaking further, OGTAN delegate Mr. Joe Oduah described the forthcoming conference as Nigeria's premier Human Capital Development platform for the oil and gas industry. He revealed that the event would feature ministerial keynote addresses, executive leadership sessions, technical exhibitions, networking opportunities, and strategic policy discussions designed to shape the future of workforce development in the nation's energy sector.

Industry observers have described the renewed PTI-OGTAN alliance as a landmark development with the potential to redefine training standards, foster innovation, and create sustainable pathways for talent development. As Nigeria navigates the complexities of energy transition and technological advancement, stakeholders believe the partnership will play a pivotal role in equipping the nation's workforce with the skills required to thrive in an increasingly competitive global energy environment.
