EFFURUN — The Petroleum Training Institute has officially flagged off a massive Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Skills Acquisition Programme designed to equip Nigerian youths with practical technical skills for employment, entrepreneurship, and national development.
The programme, held at the PTI Conference Centre in Effurun, Delta State, was organized under the Federal Ministry of Education Technical and Vocational Education and Training, FME-TVET, initiative and attracted stakeholders from the education sector, industry experts, government officials, trainees, and members of the public.
Speaking during the flag-off and induction ceremony, the Principal and Chief Executive Officer of PTI, Engr. Samuel Onoji, described the programme as another significant milestone in the institute’s commitment to youth empowerment, technical manpower development, and national growth.
According to him, the initiative was carefully designed to expose participants to practical technical training, workplace ethics, safety standards, assessment procedures, and quality assurance systems needed to produce competent and employable graduates.
He stated that the programme aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu through the Federal Ministry of Education to reposition Technical and Vocational Education as a major driver of economic development and youth empowerment in Nigeria.
Engr. Onoji stressed that industries today place greater value on competence, innovation, and technical efficiency rather than mere possession of academic certificates.
He explained that the programme seeks to empower trainees with practical abilities capable of making them self-reliant, productive, and globally competitive in today’s evolving labour market.
The PTI boss further disclosed that the institute had successfully completed the training of the first cohort of 200 trainees under the FME-TVET programme, a feat which earned PTI recognition and upgrade to a Grade A Training Centre due to its quality facilities, training standards, and effective delivery capacity.
He urged the trainees to remain focused, disciplined, and committed throughout the training period, reminding them that they represent the future technical workforce of Nigeria.
Also speaking, the Registrar and Secretary to Council of the institute, Mr. Isaac Fregene, described the programme as a strategic intervention aimed at addressing unemployment and bridging the nation’s widening skills gap.
Fregene noted that technical skills have become critical tools for economic prosperity and sustainable national development.
“Skill is the new currency of national prosperity,” he stated, adding that PTI remains committed to producing skilled entrepreneurs and job creators capable of contributing meaningfully to the nation’s economy.
In her remarks, the Acting Chief Coordinator of the Skills Development Academy, SDA, Mrs. Susan E. Oyeleye, emphasized the importance of perseverance, innovation, and entrepreneurial thinking in achieving success.
She encouraged the trainees not to become discouraged by temporary challenges, stressing that skilled individuals and entrepreneurs remain vital drivers of economic transformation and future development.
“The path to success may sometimes be difficult, but with perseverance, there is always light at the end of the tunnel,” she advised.
Also speaking, Engr. Dr. Abubakar Edicha, the Centre Coordinator of the National Skills Qualification Department, NSQD, disclosed that the second cohort of trainees would be trained across 16 identified technical skill areas.
According to him, the programme was specifically structured to bridge unemployment gaps among youths in the Niger Delta and Nigeria at large by producing technically competent manpower for industries and emerging sectors of the economy.
Participants at the event commended PTI and the Federal Government for providing Nigerian youths with opportunities to acquire practical vocational skills capable of improving livelihoods and promoting economic independence.
The ceremony featured induction sessions, technical briefings, orientation programmes, and interactive engagements between facilitators and trainees.
Observers believe the PTI Technical Skills Acquisition Scheme will significantly contribute to reducing unemployment, promoting entrepreneurship, strengthening Nigeria’s industrial workforce, and supporting sustainable economic growth across the country.
