Bayelsa Set for Presidential Spotlight as PANDEF Commends Diri’s Infrastructure Drive
By Wilson Macaulay
Bayelsa State is poised to take center stage on the national scene as the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has commended Governor Douye Diri for what it described as a bold and visionary infrastructure drive, ahead of the scheduled working visit of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on April 10, 2026.
The commendation was contained in a press statement issued by PANDEF National Chairman, Godknows Boladei Igali, who noted that the projects lined up for commissioning reflect a strategic commitment to sustainable development and economic advancement in the state.
According to the regional body, the projects billed for inauguration—including the Bayelsa Independent Power Project, the New Yenagoa City Road 1 linking the Airport Road, and the 630-metre Angiama–Oporoma Bridge—are critical infrastructure capable of transforming the socio-economic fortunes of Bayelsa and its people.
Ambassador Igali described the Independent Power Project as a landmark initiative that underscores Governor Diri’s forward-thinking approach to governance. He emphasized that harnessing the state’s rich natural gas resources to generate electricity would not only guarantee energy security but also stimulate industrialization, empower small and medium enterprises, and create employment opportunities.
“Bayelsa is clearly charting a path towards energy independence and economic resilience. This is a commendable and strategic move that will benefit present and future generations,” Igali stated.
Highlighting the significance of the Angiama–Oporoma Bridge, the PANDEF Chairman noted that the project addresses decades of infrastructural neglect in the Southern Ijaw axis. He explained that the bridge and its connecting roads would open up previously inaccessible communities, enhance trade and mobility, and foster greater integration within the state.
PANDEF further described the ongoing projects as “legacy investments” that go beyond immediate gains, stressing that they are foundational to long-term growth and regional stability. The forum added that such initiatives demonstrate purposeful leadership and a clear vision for inclusive development.
The forthcoming visit of President Tinubu, PANDEF noted, signals growing federal recognition of Bayelsa State’s strategic importance, particularly in Nigeria’s energy sector. Analysts believe the visit will not only spotlight the state’s development strides but also strengthen collaboration between the federal and state governments in key sectors such as power, infrastructure, and resource management.
Stakeholders across the Niger Delta have also welcomed PANDEF’s endorsement, describing it as a strong affirmation of Governor Diri’s performance and governance style, which has prioritized infrastructure renewal despite economic challenges.
In his closing remarks, Ambassador Igali expressed optimism that the presidential visit would usher in a new phase of accelerated development for Bayelsa State. He also extended best wishes to Governor Diri and President Tinubu for a successful commissioning ceremony.
As the countdown to April 10 continues, expectations are high that the projects to be unveiled will not only reinforce Bayelsa’s developmental trajectory but also position the state as a key player in Nigeria’s pursuit of sustainable energy and infrastructural transformation.
